CALIBRATION OF COD SPECIMENS TO DETERMINE THE ACCURACY OF CURRENT RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CLIP GAUGE DISPLACEMENT AND CRACK TIP OPENING

A small series of COD (crack opening displacement) specimens has been tested to examine the relationship between clip gauge reading (V sub G) and the crack tip COD. The crack tip COD was monitored photographically and also calculated using several current relationships. The results show that the crack tip COD values calculated from the equations recommended in the draft standard on COD testing give optimistic predictions at low COD values. A more recently advanced equation fits the observed results more closely. (Author)
