SURFACE TREATMENTS, A WAY TO CUT DOWN ROAD MAINTENANCE COSTS IN SWEDEN

In Sweden three types of surface treatments are used in road maintenance. On paved roads with low traffic single seal and chips y1 is normally used; on roads with higher traffic double seal and chips is used and; when paving gravel roads, single seal with a graded aggregate y1g is used. Pavement inventories are carried out every third year since 1971. They have made it possible to calculate the annual cost for different types of pavement. Surface treatments give lower annual cost than other types of pavement for roads with less traffic than 5000 vehicles per day. It should be noted that resealing with chips generally is preceded by an operation using premix to adjust surface irregularities. On gravel roads, surface treatment with graded aggregate often is an economical alternative to continued gravel road maintenance. The technical development and the methods of laying surface treatments are also discussed in this paper. (TRRL)
