AXIAL FATIGUE OF CORRODED WIRE ROPE SPECIMENS
The axial fatigue strength of corroded wire rope specimens measured in a series of laboratory experiments is reported. Four commercially available construction-core configurations of 1/2 in improved plow steel, bright finish wire rope were corroded under tension in sea water for from 2 to 12 weeks and then subjected to a mean load-load range axial load spectrum to determine the effect of corrosion time, mean load, and load range on the fatigue life of the specimens tested. Also corrosion rate measurements, pit depth measurements, and SEM micrographs were made for all corrosion periods. The axial fatigue data obtained were subjected to rigorous statistical analysis to determine which variables and interactions were significant with 95% confidence level. (Modified author abstract)
