AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE BUCKLING OF THIN SHELLS WITH FLAWS

The paper reviews experimental data concerning buckling load dependence upon imperfections in thin circular shells; in addition, data are presented on several important kinds of defects as yet unreported in the literature. Evidence derived from this and other experimental works has lead the author to submit the possibility that buckling load versus defect amplitude degradation curves do not smoothly descend with increasing defect amplitudes, but rather the curve may be a lower-bound envelope of group of curves, each representing some discrete type of defect not necessarily obvious, but present on the cylindrical shell surface. The paper discusses some major discrepancies that can arise when different test setups and techniques are used. (Author)
