AUTOMATIC RESTRAINTS--A TEN YEAR LEARNING CURVE
A great deal of information on automatic restraints has been developed in the past 10 years. This paper reviews General Motors' technical and sales experience with inflatable restraints and automatic belts. Additional accident injury statistics relating to unrestrained adults and children are provided because they are germane to the design of inflatable restraints and to an assessment of the benefits that might be realized by various restraints. Advances in injury assessment technology that can be used toward improving future restraint systems also are reviewed.
