THE ASTM TEST MONITORING SYSTEM--PURPOSE AND OPERATION
The purpose of the Test Monitoring Center (TMC), created in 1973, is to establish, maintain and operate a system for assuring that the Lubricating Oil Engine Test Procedures, published in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Special Technical Publication (STP) 315, "Multicylinder Test Sequences for Evaluating Performance of Crankcase Lubricants" are conducted properly. TMC is not involved in engine oil approvals. Its basic contribution is to calibrate engine test stands and/or engine test laboratories as prescribed by the specific ASTM test procedure via reference oils to provide authenticity to the results from commercial oils run in-between reference oil runs. Also the Society of Automotive Engineers Lubricants Review Institute's (SAE LRI) Review Committee independently utilizes TMC reference oil data in evaluating candidate oils for approval by the Military. TMC's operation is detailed and further expansion possibilities are discussed.
