ARSR-2 RADAR DUAL FEEDHORN ANTENNA MODIFICATION

The intent of these efforts was to determine the feasibility of a dual feedhorn configuration employed with the ARSR-2 antenna reflector. The feedhorn geometry was modified by adding a separate receive only feedhorn and polarizer to produce separate antenna two-way coverage patterns for the close-in and long-range capabilities of the radar system. The close-in coverage was obtained by transmission on the normal (low) beam and reception on the second (high or tilted-up) beam. The long range coverage was obtained by both transmission and reception on the normal beam. The effort was divided into three parts: (1) analysis of the problems associated with placing a second feedhorn in the focal region of the reflector and with generating good circular polarization characteristics for both beam patterns; (2) design and fabrication of the necessary antenna feed network hardware; and (3) performance of experimental measurements.
