VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY AND ITS EVALUATION

COMPATIBILITA SULLA SICUREZZA DEI VEICOLI E SUA VALUTAZIONE

Compatibility, defined as a vehicle's capacity to coexist with other road users with minimal damage given the inevitability of accidents, is a major aspect of safety improvement. The relevant parameters are the relative mass, rigidity and "interface" (the mutual effects of the shape and rigidity distribution). These and other aspects of compatibility, notably vehicle aggressivity, are reviewed for various collision types. This review is followed by a consideration of the means of evaluating compatibility. Given that the simulation of collisions between a range of models at various speeds is prohibitively expensive, the means available for simulating collisions between vehicles are considered. Most of these are unsatisfactory for various reasons, so Fiat has developed a more sophisticated approach using mobile, deformable barriers impacting vehicles containing instrumented dummies and extrapolation by means of mathematical models based on test data to various impact speeds and types for various vehicles. The advantages of this approach are considered. (TRRL)
