RECYCLING OF D-CRACKED CONCRETE PAVEMENT

This paper discusses the recycling of a D-cracked Portland cement concrete pavement in southwestern Minnesota. Following a brief discussion of the reasons for considering concrete recycling, the paper traces the background by the Minnesota Department of Transportation to select a project in an area which is short of quality paving aggregates. Laboratory studies leading to the project design are described. The sequence of operations used by the contractor to salvage the in-place pavement are outlined, followed by a discussion of the routine slip-form paving operations. Economic and energy studies based on the project have justified the recycling concept for the original concrete pavement.
