INTEGRATED NAVIGATIONAL AND DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM

Attempts are described for developing a high accuracy navigation system for use in the central Pacific. The first phase of this project was the introduction of the transit doppler sonar navigation system with an incorporated passive data-logging facility. During the second phase computer software was modified enabling the integration of worldwide available radio-navigation system. In acceptance trials on board the RV VALDIVIA the transit-doppler sonar-radio navigation system was able to determine ship's postion to within a few hundred meters.
