Introduction of Construction Information Modeling/Management (CIM) to Road and Bridge Design for Optimizing a Highway Project From Construction to Maintenance Phases
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) established a policy called “iConstruction” to enhance productivity of all processes of infrastructure projects such as plan, investigation, survey, design, construction, operation and maintenance (O&M) and rehabilitation. Construction Information Modeling/Management (CIM) is the key process for “i-Construction” in civil infrastructure projects. CIM involves not only three-dimensional (3- D) modeling of structures, but also the addition of information in each process such as survey, design, construction, O&M and rehabilitation to manage infrastructures effectively. This paper presents efforts for introducing CIM to the Daini-Shinmei Road project, particularly regarding the topographic survey for following the design, construction and maintenance phases. Conventionally, aerial photographic surveying and on-site route surveying are conducted to obtain necessary topographic data for the construction project. However, state-of-the-art 3-D laser scanning methods for topographic survey were utilized in this project to introduce CIM from the design and construction to O&M phases. In this project, an airborne laser survey system, mobile mapping system (MMS) and ground laser survey system were applied for the topographic survey in accordance with necessity of each topographic and structural data in addition to conventional aerial photographic surveying. By introducing a 3-D surveying system, it becomes possible to obtain a more accurate and wider area of topographic data in less time, leading to an acceleration of the project schedule. This paper presents the effects of the 3-D surveying system and discusses the effective use of CIM in the maintenance phase in the future.
