THE HUMBER BRIDGE
The benefits of the newly opened humber bridge at a cost of found90M pounds from an original estimate of found13M are listed. The bridge which was opened in July 1981 took 20 years to plan and build. It is 2200M long with 155.5M high towers and 71000 km of wire making up the main cables. A brief history of the planning of the bridge is also outlined and the reasons for the high level tolls are given. Although the predicted figure is a meagre 4000 vehicles crossing the bridge daily at present it is expected to rise to 10000 in two years and 14000 by 1990. (TRRL)
