STEERING-BOGIE DEVELOPMENTS BEING PURSUED BY BRITISH RAILWAYS

Requirement to take up an approximate radial position in curves to minimise flange and rail wear and with the need for stiff primary-suspension to overcome hunting, cross-bracing is introduced as a simple arrangement and forming two "A" frames pivoted at the bogie centre. More sophisticated method applied to a "rapid-transit" air-sprung bogie where damping relaxes on entering a curve and so presents a yaw-relaxing condition. A cross-brace alternative will be tested alongside.
