COMPUTERS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING

The author illustrates the wide range of applications for the computer in the field of highway engineering. For use in the field of planning and environmental studies an outline is given of coba (cost benefit analysis), cosmos (cost modelling system), programs in the bips (British integrated program system) suite, moss (modelling system by strings) and hops (highway optimisation program system). Programs to be used in connection with ground modelling, alignment - horizontal and vertical, the cross section, volumes and automatic drafting are outlined. Minicomputers and programmable calculators and coordinate geometry design programs are also discussed. Applications in the field of construction and maintenance enable the engineer to provide additional information on levels and quantities and to forecast maintenance requirements. Programs carrlev, March and chart are briefly mentioned. Future trends are discussed. (TRRL)
