ROCK SHELTER OPENS

The Avon Gorge Gallery, on the A4 Hotwell Road, immediately beneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol will protect traffic from being struck by rock falling from the unstable vertical face beneath the bridge abutments. The 90 M long gallery has a 900 mm deep welded plate girder roof acting compositely with a 300 mm thick reinforced concrete slab. The roof is covered with a 2 M thick layer of crushed limestone aggregates to absorb the impact of falling rock. The river side of the roof is supported on a collonade of reinforced concrete columns on piled foundations. At the other side, near the rock face, the roof is carried on reinforced concrete abutments, anchored to the rock. The road surface was raised by 400 mm during the building of the gallery, to alleviate flooding at high tides. Lack of documentary guidance on the dynamic design of the structure has led to constructional methods being developed from first principles. The roof has been designed to cope with the fall of a 1.3 tonne piece of rock. Rebound characteristics were confirmed by in situ tests recorded on slow motion film. (TRRL)
