TRAFFIC EDUCATION WITH SLOW LEARNERS

The author outlines the way in which she adapted the materials in the schools council health education publications, "All About Me" and "Think Well", to meet the needs of slow learners. The experiences of slow learners may be different from those of the average child, and their ability to learn from their experiences differ from other children. Planning safety education for slow learners involves careful consideration of priorities. Because of their slowness, all aspects cannot be covered, and the most important steps must be identified. It is suggested that a "thumb nail" sketch of the target group is drawn up giving important information to indicate what starting points and methods would be appropriate to the development level of the pupils. Practical work in the actual environment is the greatest need because these children are less able to transfer skills and knowledge to new situations. Two age groups - 5 to 8 year olds and 9 to 13 year olds are discussed. The younger children need to be taught to obey simple instructions, and recognise vehicles and objects on the streets. The main difficulty with the older children is in applying their increasing knowledge. (TRRL)
