HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION - BLAST THE NEIGHBOURS
Construction of a 5 km section of National Route N103, the Johannesburg southern bypass, is described. The route includes four major cuts and fills requiring some 75000 cu m of rock to be blasted. This operation required great precision in blasting control as the site is located in a built-up area. Problems created by the poor quality clay as fill material were overcome by using 200000 cu M of rockfill spoil material from the Klipriviersberg reservoir project. A delay in the construction of the concrete pavement will be caused by a 12 month period to determine settlements of the underlying clay material. (TRRL)
