USE OF LIGHTWEIGHT SAWMILL RESIDUE IN HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS

A new use for sawmill residue as a lightweight fill for road construction is described. Shrouding of this residue in polyethylene sheeting prevented thermogenesis and subsequent physical deterioration of the fill. High levels of carbon dioxide and methane indicated anaerobic conditions within the fill. Strength, compression, and density information was generated from the sawmill residue prior to road construction. Following several years of successful service, the use of shrouded sawmill residue is suggested as a cheap lightweight substitute for conventional gravels. The use of such shrouding will also minimize the risk of extractives being leached by rainwater from the sawmill residue and polluting adjacent water systems. (TRRL)
