THE DYNAMICS OF CAR IMPACT AND OCCUPANT PROTECTION

This paper reviews the impact situations occurring when cars crash and their occupants are injured. Simple theoretical models of these impacts are discussed to provide a basis for understanding the subject. Details of the models are given in the references. Injury occurs when a car decelerates violently in a crash and its occupants are flung around its interior. Other causes of injury are by intrusion and ejection. The way in which seat belts protect occupants is considered for frontal impacts and the main features of side impacts are mentioned. (TRRL)
