Strategies for Work Zone Transportation Management Plans
This report provides a practitioner-ready guidebook on how to select and implement strategies that improve safety and traffic operations in roadway construction work zones. The report describes a wide range of transportation management plans (TMP) strategies as well as how to select the most effective and cost-efficient strategy for a particular construction setting. For each strategy, the guidebook provides a brief description, conditions where the strategy is appropriate, anticipated benefits, documented effectiveness, crash modification factors, design requirements including hardware or software needed, implementation considerations, estimated cost, and examples of its use. Individual chapters address: work zone safety management strategies, corridor/network management strategies, traffic incident management and enforcement strategies, demand management strategies, control strategies, project coordination, alternative contracting and construction strategies, traffic control devices, motorist information strategies, public awareness strategies, framework for evaluation of work zone strategies, and additional transportation management plan strategy resources.
