URBAN TRAFFIC CONTROL - THE WEST YORKSHIRE EXPERIENCE

The paper examines the introduction and development of Urban Traffic Control (UTC) in West Yorkshire and in particular, the UTC system operational in Leeds. This system is based on three Ferranti 700s Argus computers used in conjunction with type 105 controllers instead of a TRANSYT 5 system as originally planned. Operational in 1979, with 80 traffic signals or pelican crossings on-line, the system is now planned to include 130 such signals. Operational experience and details of "before-and-after" studies are discussed including safety, cycle variability, fault monitoring and system limitations. Future developments will examine the role of control engineering, system performance, public transport operation, and, emergency diversion planning. (TRRL)
