AERIAL ROPEWAY INDUSTRY MAKES ITS CASE

The article presents the case for greater use of aerial ropeway installations for conveying bulk construction materials instead of the conventional haul road and dump truck philosophy. Based on the need to investigate practical alternatives to transport systems depending on petroleum-based fuels, the article shows that ropeway systems can generate their own power and use it efficiently and economically. During downward journeys, ropeways are braked electrically and produce power which can be fed into power networks. A major advantage claimed for the ropeway, is its ability to operate over difficult terrain, while over flat country a ropeway system can be a practical alternative to new road construction. On current high-speed, high-capacity, ropeways automatic control systems ensure the correct positioning of buckets for loading and unloading without the need for manual control. Costs quoted indicate the efficiency of ropeways compared with lorry transport. (TRRL)
