THE ADOPTION OF THE METRIC SYSTEM IN THE MARINE INDUSTRY: REPORT, BASIC PROGRAMME AND GUIDE
The report briefly reviews the current position and then outlines a basic program to achieve the change to the metric system. A chart is included outlining the recommended program and dates for adoption of the system within the marine industry. An extensive selection is provided of basic materials, semi-finished and finished products which will be affected by the change. This chart in turn is used in conjunction with the design particulars and drawing of a 21 knot cargo liner on which is indicated the materials and products listed on the chart. The final section deals with aids to education and training, financial assistance, standardization, supplies, stocking and storage and a typical time table for the change to metric within a shipyard. Three pages of typical mathematical calculations illustrate the use of SI units.
