TRANSIT HARDWARE: SHIFT TO RENOVATION

With reductions in federal funding of new rail-transit and people-mover projects, transit authorities (old and new) are looking at renewal and overhaul. Because inflation and new-car problems have made car replacement less practical, emphasis is now on rennovation of existing equipment. Parts supply, reliability and cost come in for increasing attention. The plans for renovation of New York City Transit Authority and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority equipment are discussed. Washington Metro is acquiring new cars as its system expands but the existing fleet is to have its reliability and performance enhanced by design changes.
