IS THE AEROMETRO HONG KONG'S ANSWER?

It is anticipated that Hong Kong will need additional rapid transport of people after the completion of the successful Mass Transit Railway (MTR). An overhead transport system has been suggested as an extension to the MTR, and a feasibility study is being undertaken of a 30 km network capable of transporting 9000 people per hour. It is claimed that the system would cost one-fifth of the cost of tunnelling and way-clearing for a ground network. Further advantages of the flexible tracked overhead system are presented, and details of design for high passenger flows and high wind stresses are considered. The possible incorporation of lengths of rigid track, where advantageous, is mentioned, and the designs and uses of various overhead systems in other countries are reviewed. (TRRL)
