ALCOHOL- HYDROCARBON BLENDS - THE LIQUID FUELS FOR THE EIGHTIES

Australia's major fuel deficiency is in the area of liquid fuels, particularly liquid fuels for transport. This paper outlines a strategy that could be adopted to use its reserves of natural gas and more abundant reserves of black and brown coal to produce methanol for use as a liquid fuel. This would be accompanied by a parallel program aimed at the production of ethanol from crops. The uses of these alcohols in the 1980's would be as blends with liquid hydrocarbons from other sources (oil, shale oil, or even coal liquefaction). Some comments are made on costs of production and volumetric efficiencies of such blends. The paper concludes by discussing the changes necessary to conventional engines to make most effective use of these fuel blends. (Author/TRRL)
