ELECTRONICS COME TO TICKET MACHINES

Today bus operators need statistics and passenger-journey information in connection with local authority revenue support, and possibly for identifying loss-making journeys. A ticket-issuing system providing this information is complicated and introduces electronics into the operation. This article gives descriptions, approximate costs, and operating details of three British machines which have been developed for the above purpose. These are the "Concept" machine by Almex Ticket Co, the "Autofare-3" system by Control Systems Ltd, and the "Timtronic" model by the Ticket Equipment Co, which has been on trial for about three years. Similarities and differences between the three systems in their use of magnetic tapes and solid state circuitry are discussed. The author considers what needs there might be for such equipment if Britain adopted a European fares system and emphasises the time-saving resulting from off-the-bus ticket sales. (TRRL)
