THE CAPACITY OF MAJOR/MINOR JUNCTIONS

The authors briefly outline some of the main results of A study of the capacities of major/minor junctions. Tests were carried out on 37 public roads at three-arm junctions to collect data on the capacities of the right and left-turning streams of the minor road. The capacity of the right-turning major road stream was investigated on the TRRL test track at Crowthorne. Vehicles were recorded as they passed through the junction, and the counts were classified into "light" and "heavy" vehicles. Periods of queueing for the non-priority streams were also recorded. A wide range of geometric aspects of layout was investigated. In addition average approach speeds of traffic from each direction of the major road were measured for each site, and an index of bunching was established for the priority streams, again for each direction of major road travel. Regression analysis was applied to the measurements obtained and results are briefly discussed. (TRRL)
