VOIDS AND THE DESIGN OF COMPACTED DENSE ASPHALTIC MIXTURES

The voids in compacted dense asphaltic mixes are divided into three groups; the interstitial micropores, entrained air in the binder and mortar, and air in the mineral particles. The micropore content can be measured and controlled. It is proposed that the micropore content be used in the design and control of dense mixes. A testing procedure is described which is a modification of the conventional "Marshall" one. The experimental work covers three main mixes; two gap-graded rolled asphalts with and without added stone, and an asphaltic concrete.(a) (TRRL)
