THE APPARENT IMPACT OF DIVERSIFICATION UPON THE PERFORMANCE OF GENERAL FREIGHT MOTOR CARRIERS
Seventeen publicly-owned general freight carriers and eleven owned by conglomerates were studied and their performance compared over the period 1968-1976. Data were selected from annual reports to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Some holding companies were engaged in other aspects of transportation, some manufactured industrial goods and others manufactured consumer goods. The author examined revenue growth rates, operating ratios and net income ratios; "t-tests" were applied to the data to ascertain whether there were significant differences between the two groups. No statistical differences were found between publicly-held carriers and conglomerates with respect to rates of revenue growth, operating ratios and profitability as measured by net income as a percentage of revenue and net income after tax as a percentage of revenue.
