SUBMERGED FLOATING CONCRETE TUBE AS A POSSIBLE ROAD CONNECTION ACROSS A NORWEGIAN FJORD
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration submitted in March 1979 a report on a preliminary design for a submerged floating concrete tube as a deepwater crossing in Eidfjord, Norway. The system chosen seems well adaptable for the actual local conditions in Eidfjord. The tube dimension will allow a practical arrangement of the required reinforcement, and give the wanted net buoyancy with a reasonable ballast. The tube will have sufficient impact safety in the areas exposed to ship collisions. Besides, the probability of such occurrences will be extremely small. Waves and current may, under certain conditions, induce oscillations in the structure. However, the stresses, due to them, will be covered by the breaking capacity of the tube and the cables. Besides, the oscillations can be prevented, if necessary, by "fins" along a part of the tube. The report includes proposals for construction procedures without unreasonable requirements as to equipment or competence. However, strict claims as to detailed planning of the work and to quality and accuracy of construction must be carried through. (TRRL)
