REINFORCED EARTH TECHNIQUES AND STRUCTURES
Developments in reinforced earth construction techniques are examined, and in particular the interaction between soil and reinforcing members. Interest has been concentrated on fill materials other than conventional granular soils, for example waste materials such as unburnt colliery discard (minestone). The work of TRRL is mentioned in the evaluation of other than ideal granular soils which could result in savings in the cost of importing granular soils. A major responsibility of the ncb is the greater use of minestone in foundations, embankments and retaining walls. Data from such applications can be used to demonstrate its acceptability to the dtp. If minestone could be shown to have lower frost susceptibility compared with conventional fill materials it would demonstrate its value as an alternative fill material. It is also necessary to counteract the development of pore water pressure as Minestone is an effective impermeable material. The effects of constituents contained within coal mine wastes has also to be evaluated to obtain data on the effect of leachates and fill stability. (TRRL)
