BITUMEN EMULSIONS FOR ROAD MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION

The energy crisis of the past few years and the growing awareness of environmental and health and safety considerations has led to an increasing interest in the known and potential use of bitumen road emulsions. These binders are a convenient way of utilising the high viscosity of bitumen in a low viscosity state which is convenient for transporting, mixing and spraying. They are innocuous and non-flammable and - as they release only water into the atmosphere - may be considered as environmentally acceptable. In the early 1920s emulsion was used mainly as a binder for grouting but it is now used for 30 to 40 per cent of all surface dressing in the UK and for many well-proven applications which are determined by its sealing, coating and water-proofing properties. This article attempts to show the extraordinary versatility of road emulsions by looking at their many uses in highway maintenance and construction both in the UK and abroad.(a) (TRRL)
