The author describes two fairly similar motorway tunnels constructed in different rock masses. After giving details of the sites and work carried out, the author outlines the laboratory and in-situ tests on rocks (deformability, strength, natural stresses, velocity of sound wave propagation), and the selection and operation of temporary and final supports.
