GRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF SETTLEMENTS OBSERVED UNDER ENGINEERING STRUCTURES

ANALYSE GRAPHIQUE DES TASSEMENTS OBSERVES SOUS LES OUVRAGES

The processing of substructure settlement measurements can be carried out by means of a graphic analysis method which uses the results of measurements made at regular intervals. This method, based on the work by Asaoka can be applied to the analysis of one-dimensional consolidation and creep as well as that of consolidation round vertical drains. The article recalls the conditions governing the practical use of the method, analyses its theoretical justification and gives two examples of application to the interpretation of observations taken on two embankments built on compressible soil. It is concluded that this method is of great practical interest facilitating the separate evaluation of final settlement and rate of consolidation of the subgrade. The only reservation to the systematic use of the method is that an a posteriori verification should be conducted of the representativeness of the final settlement and of the coefficient of consolidation obtained.
