JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SOLID-STATE INTERLOCKING

British Railways and signal suppliers have an agreement to develop microprocessors as replacements for relays in interlockings. A pilot scheme, to be installed in the mid-1980s, will be the proving ground for what is expected to be adoption of solid-state interlocking as standard in subsequent resignaling schemes. Reductions in the size of enclosures and amount of cabling are expected to be among the benefits. The Solid-State Interlocking project was conceived by BR's research and signal engineers; four years of work has been carried out to demonstrate the practicability of relying on solid-state components to perform vital functions in signaling. Redundancy to counter the unpredictability of failure modes when electronics is involved is one of the basic concepts of the project.
