ABRASION TESTS ON ASPHALT SPECIMENS TO DETERMINE THE MOST ECONOMICAL MIX DESIGN

ABRIEBSVERSUCHE AN ASPHALTKOERPERN ZUR ERMITTLUNG DER WIRTSCHAFTLICHSTEN MISCHGUTZUSAMMENSETZUNG

Within the framework of large series of tests on laboratory mixes, the influence of the following parameters on the wearing behaviour of asphalt was studied: (1) the chippings quality, (2) modified bitumens, (3) type of bitumens and filler content, (4) waterproofing from amongst the various commonly used wear test devices, the impact wear device from the firm of Sager & Woerner was selected for carrying out the tests, as in German studies this machine had demonstrated the best correlation in the measurement of wear values. Marshall specimens or core specimens of diameter = 100 mm are necessary as test specimens for the impact wear test. Two test roads were first constructed for preliminary testing for the optimization of the mix design with three types of stone material. In addition, with three other stone aggregates with variations in the chippings content and in the binder content, impact wear tests were carried out on Marshall specimens. In order to achieve results which would be as close as possible to conditions in practice and to compare these with results from laboratory mixes, additional impact wear tests were carried out on cores from bituminous pavements (distributed throughout the entire region of the federal German republic). On the basis of these test results, proposals were prepared for the carrying out of further test series. (TRRL)
