Residual Capacity of Precast Prestressed Concrete (PPC) Deck Beams with Transverse Cracks

This research project will conduct full-scale experimental and analytical studies on precast prestressed concrete (PPC) deck beams. The primary objectives of the research are as follows. Investigate the effect of post-cracking moment redistribution along PPC deck beams and use this information to quantify the residual capacity of cracked beams. Study the effect of crack location along the beam and its depth and width on the beam’s capacity. This will include both open and hairline (closed) cracks. Quantify the length along the beam through which prestressing force is compromised due to local transverse cracking. Develop guidelines for the Illinois Department of Transportation to predict the residual capacity of cracked PPC deck beams and how to utilize this information in performing load-rating for PPC deck beam bridges with transverse cracks.
