REDESIGN CUTS THE COST OF DB'S RAILCARS
Faced with a need to provide a reasonable level of comfort at acceptable cost on its many rural lines, German Federal Railway has redesigned its single-unit VT627 and two-car VT628 diesel railcars in an attempt to achieve lower capital and operating costs. Common components for all three types of vehicle and changes in interior and exterior fittings combine to offer relatively low construction cost without loss of comfort. One-man operation with on-train ticket issue will reduce operating costs.
