REMANUFACTURE EXTENDS LOCO LIFE BY 20 YEARS
When maintenance of a locomotive requires renewal of major components that may no longer be available the operator has two options: buy a new locomotive or remanufacture. In favorable conditions remanufacture may require only a quarter of the replacement cost, while giving the loco an additional working life of up to 20 years. Factors influencing the decision to remanufacturing include availability of labor and workshop capacity as well as fleet standardization.
