ROAD RECYCLING AT VAN REENEN'S PASS
The wirtgen 1900C heavy-duty, cold-milling unit, being used on SA road reconstruction projects, incorporates a 2 M rotating drum to remove road surface materials for re-use in providing a new wearing course. The machine, operating on crawlers, is completely automatic and incorporates sensing and levelling devices which enable it to plane to within 2-3 mm. It can cut up to 200 mm deep in one pass and remove 100 t of material in one hour. In the recycling process milled material is reheated and mixed witha rejuvenating agent, or a higher penetration grade bitumen, with a percentage of freshly produced aggregate. The first application of the machine at van Reenen's pass in Natal is described. (TRRL)
