GROUTING OF FOUNDATIONS - CHAMBAL BRIDGE ON NH NO 3 NEAR DHOLPUR, RAJASTHAN
Grouting of foundations for bridges has rarely been attempted. The bridge over river Chambal on nh no 3, Agra-Bombay route near Dholpur in Rajasthan state of India was damaged in April, 1973, due to settlement preceded by excessive scour under one of the piers. The bridge has since been rehabilitated by reconstruction of eight new spans supported on seven new well foundations. The existing and new foundations have been treated by grouting to protect the clay shale or clay seams interbedded with thin layers of sand stone, lime stone and/or silt stone underneath the foundations against solution-cum-erosional effect of artesian water. The post-grouting water percolation tests under limiting pressures have shown remarkable results indicating successful grouting of the strata. The authors highlight the geology of the strata, the need for grouting design criteria, construction details based on experimental studies, quality control and techniques of grouting.(a) (TRRL)
