REPORT OF THE COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE NEEDS STUDY

This study of the rehabilitation needs of the severely handicapped, and alternatives for meeting those needs, addresses the needs in greater breadth than depth. The implication of the extent of those needs is thus made evident for the guidance of the rehabilitation community. Among significant findings are statistics which characterize the population by resident-type (home; institution-18%), age (with equal proportions in the age-groups 18-64 and 65-and-older), and frequency of disability-types (musculo-skeletal and cardio-vascular impairements are most frequent; next are mental and nervous-system disorders). Among all needs, transportation is ranked as second only to employment.
