HYDRODYNAMIC EFFECTS OF OIL SLICK MECHANICAL CONTROL DEVICES

The objective of this section was to investigate the behavior of an oil slick under the influence of various mechanical control devices. Four types of slick control mechanisms were investigated: Oil slick energy dissipation; oil slick shields; rapid removal of oil by lifting mechanisms; oil slick submersion devices. The results of this research program address the hydrodynamic behavior of oil and water two-phase flow in the vicinity of the various slick control mechanisms. The effects of important test parameters are presented. The slick control mechanisms are evaluated in terms of their ability to control oil slicks at fast water current velocities up to six feet per second. (Modified author abstract)
