Crash Rates of Convertible Cars
This study compares crash rates and fatalities between automobiles with a convertible and nonconvertible version during 2014-2018. Data comes from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, the National Automotive Sampling System General Estimates System (NASS-GES), and the Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS). Vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for convertibles were 1,595 less on average than the nonconvertible versions. Rollover crash rates were similar between both versions, 24% convertibles, 23% nonconvertibles, with likelihood of ejection in a rollover crash higher for convertibles, 43% versus 35%. Overall, even when accounting for VMT, convertibles had lower rates of driver deaths and driver involvements in police-reported crashes than their nonconvertible counterparts.
