GREAT LAKES ICE NAVIGATION CENTER
The Ice Navigation Center, located in the Ninth Coast Guard District Headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, was established in January 1971 to collect and provide ice data, in connection with icebreaker support to the Great Lakes merchant fleet. Information is given on ice data, collection, analysis and dissemination. An additional ice observation system was recently adapted. It is SLAR-Side Looking Airborne Radar. Two radar units, one on each side, are being used on board each of three OV-1 aircraft. Each radar has a range of 30 miles, for a total swarth of about 60 miles. The reflected radar signal is recorded on photographic film. Following the flight, the film is processed and a radar image of ice cover much like a snapshot of the lake is available for detailed study and analysis.
