DEFINITIONS OF AND METHODS OF ANALYZING URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT NETWORKS

DEFINITIONS ET METHODES D'ANALYSE DE LA CLIENTELE DES RESEAUX DE TRANSPORTS COLLECTIFS URBAINS

Attention is drawn to the importance of knowing the users of urban public transport systems and their evolution. This note explains how to define patronage indicators, outlines the problems arising from the definition of these indicators and the resulting implications regarding methods of collecting these indicators. Details are given of two possible types of survey: (1) among users of public transport, and (b) among the whole population of a town. Examples of surveys already conducted illustrate specific points. The results of the surveys show that patronage takes place over a given period of time and refers to a type of usage of a specific transport mode, that a distinction must be made between the structure of users and the structure of journeys, and that there exist several methods of describing the users of a public transport network and that each of these methods gives a specific description.
