The Future of Airports: A Vision of 2040 and 2070
The Future of Airports is a research initiative coordinated by the Airport Think Tank of Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC) Alumni with a global panel of about 20 thought aviation leaders from various backgrounds, experiences, and affiliations. This panel discussed various prospective topics to explore and forecast the long-term future of the airport industry. Each time, the panel members considered the future trends and potential disruptive changes, the emerging transformational innovations, their impact on practice and challenges for air transportation, and the needs in research, education and policies for anticipating and facilitating these changes. The global analysis of this research project was conducted between March 2019 and April 2020. This consolidated report presents an overview of the topics generated by the Airport Think Tank including: sustainable business models, smart airports, security threats, passenger terminals, airside and airspace compatibility, operational performance and resilience, and human resources and education. The appendices include: effects of COVID-19 on the aviation industry and long-term threats to airport resilience.
