The two-section bibliography is devoted to the development of rapid rail mass transportation in two major metropolitan areas. The first section contains citations referring to BART, the San Francisco Bay area rapid transit system in California. Section two refers to the combined subway and surface transit system for the District of Columbia and outlying areas in Maryland and Virginia. Materials in both sections cover line siting, policies and planning, cars and power systems, stations and trackwork, human factors, travel patterns, and public attitudes. Attention is given to financing, revenue, maintenance, local impact, and environmental impact, as well as fare collection, noise, and legislation. Local and regional needs are discussed.
