MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL ECONOMY AND EMISSIONS

Progress to date in the development of a driving cycle for Perth is outlined. The research vehicle and instrumentation are described and a detailed explanation of the project's route selection procedure is given. Data are presented which demonstrate the variations in driving patterns throughout the city and the need for taking account of these differences in making a driving cycle. A cluster analysis based on a range of urban characteristics has provided seven distinct areas for which routes have been chosen for data collection. This will allow development of a driving cycle for each area from which a composite cycle for the city can be constructed. Additional data on characteristics of normal trip making around Perth in the research car are given, problems encountered are summarised, and a work outline is presented. (Author/TRRL)
